IATA Calls for Systematic COVID-19 Testing Before Departure

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the development of rapid and systematic COVID-19 testing for travellers before departure, instead of imposing quarantine measures, in order to re-establish global air connectivity.

According to the latest IATA’s statement, the trade association will work through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as well as health authorities in order to implement this solution as soon as possible.

“The key to restoring the freedom of mobility across borders is systematic COVID-19 testing of all travellers before departure. This will give governments the confidence to open their borders without complicated risk models that see constant changes in the rules imposed on travel. Testing all passengers will give people back their freedom to travel with confidence. And that will put millions of people back to work,” IATA’s Director General and CEO, Alexandre de Juniac, pointed out.

IATA’s statement stressed that International travel had marked a 92 per cent decrease, compared to 2019.

International travel has marked a 92 per cent decrease, compared to 2019 levels, even though nearly a half year has passed, since a large share of countries imposed entry bans and other restrictions to stop the further spread of the deadly virus.

The devastation caused by the deadly virus has pushed the International Air Transport Association to urge the governments to implement the testing process in order to save the economic sector.

Nearly 65.5 million jobs depend on the aviation industry, which risks collapsing if the current circumstances do not change.

The revenues could exceed $400 billion while the industry was set to mark a record net loss of more than $80 billion in 2020 under a more “optimistic scenario.”
